Ohio’s Recovery Friendly Workplace: Empowering Businesses and People in Recovery

Catch up quickly: Ohio Governor Mike DeWine launched the Ohio Recovery Friendly Workplace (RFW) program, encouraging businesses to support people in recovery from substance use or mental health conditions by implementing recovery-friendly practices, according to a recent press release.

 

The big picture: Ohio’s new initiative promotes hiring people in recovery, reducing workplace stigma surrounding mental illness and addiction, and providing crucial support systems for employees battling these issues.

 

By the numbers:

  • 19.2% of Ohio adults (over 1.7 million) report having a substance use disorder.
  • 9.2% of Ohio adults (469,000+) experienced serious thoughts of suicide.

 

Why it matters: This program empowers businesses to create inclusive work environments, benefiting both employees and employers. Recovering individuals gain stability and pride from meaningful work, while businesses see economic benefits, like saving $8,500 for every employee who recovers from substance use.

 

What’s next: Interested businesses can apply for the Recovery Friendly Workplace designation, joining companies like Nationwide and JBM Packaging, which have already implemented recovery-friendly policies.
